A bit about me...

This is my little blog about life, family, happy things, sad things, complaints, pet peeves, recipes, books, you name it! Since I'm a stay at home mom, I'm sure it will mostly revolve around my children, husband and I and what we are all up to. I thought it would be a fun way to interact with family and friends who are far away or busy or whatever. I hope to have some fun, funny, enlightening and even sad things to say along this journey. Life to me is about all the little things, like rock skipping with the kids.

Very Proud of my CGC pup!!

Yesterday, Maile and I did our CGC testing (Canine Good Citizen) and she passed with flying colors!! :)  She is an obedience rockstar and I'm so happy to have her in my family!!  I suppose most people in the world don't know what the CGC test is so I will post it at the end of this post.  Really all it is, is the end result of a well mannered dog that knows what is expected of him/her.  It is really easy to accomplish if you take the time.  With Maile, the only part that was slightly hard for her was having her feet examined, she hates that... but she was a super star and allowed it perfectly.  I was and still am very much thrilled with her.  Doing this Obedience thing has become a bit of a hobby for me now that I am no longer riding and showing horses.  I can't even explain how rewarding it is to have an animal work with you and understand exactly what you are saying and move accordingly.  It is somewhat of a dance, a way of communicating through subtle voice and body commands.  It amazes me daily how smart my dogs can be when I take the time to work with them and communicate with them in a way they can understand.  Very rewarding and it is my privelage to be able to work with such special creatures... both Maile and Kona have rewarded me with hours of fun, obedience, communcation and this fun little dance we do with our dogs.  Next step for Maile (and maybe Kona too) will be the Rally Obedience Ring... I have decided to show my girl and maybe both girls in the Rally ring and I can't wait.  Hoping for her first show to be early 2012.  In case you are wondering what Rally is, I'm going to add a link at the end of this post :)

Test 1: Accepting a friendly stranger
The dog will allow a friendly stranger to approach it and speak to the
handler in a natural, everyday situation.
Test 2: Sitting politely for petting
The dog will allow a friendly stranger to pet it while it is out with its
handler.
Test 3: Appearance and grooming
The dog will welcome being groomed and examined and will permit
someone, such as a veterinarian, groomer or friend of the owner, to do so.
Test 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
The handler/dog team will take a short “walk” to show that the dog is in
control while walking on a leash.
Test 5: Walking through a crowd
The dog and handler walk around and pass close to several people (at least
three) to demonstrate that the dog can move about politely in pedestrian
traffic and is under control in public places.
Test 6: Sit and down on command and Staying in place
The dog will respond to the handler’s commands to 1) sit, 2) down
and will 3) remain in the place commanded by the handler (sit or down
position, whichever the handler prefers).
Test 7: Coming when called
The dog will come when called by the handler. The handler will walk
10 feet from the dog, turn to face the dog, and call the dog.
Test 8: Reaction to another dog
To demonstrate that the dog can behave politely around other dogs,
two handlers and their dogs approach each other from a distance of about
20 feet, stop, shake hands and exchange pleasantries, and continue on for
about 10 feet.
Test 9: Reaction to distraction
To demonstrate the dog is confident when faced with common distracting
situations, the evaluator will select and present two distractions. Examples
of distractions include dropping a chair, rolling a crate dolly past the dog,
having a jogger run in front of the dog, or dropping a crutch or cane.
Test 10: Supervised separation
This test demonstrates that a dog can be left with a trusted person, if
necessary, and will maintain training and good manners. Evaluators are
encouraged to say something like, “Would you like me to watch your
dog?” and then take hold of the dog’s leash. The owner will go out of sight
for three minutes.
Equipment
You’ll need to bring your dog’s brush or comb to the CGC test. In the
CGC test, dogs must wear a buckle collar or slip collar.
For details regarding equipment, expanded descriptions of the exercises
above, and how the CGC Test is administered, see:

The CGC TEST consists of 10 skills needed by all well-mannered dogs.
All of the exercises are done on a leash.

Awesome Grilled Steak Recipe!! :)

Oh wow this was soooo yummmm!!...

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 2 (1/2 pound) rib-eye steaks

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, honey, olive oil, ground black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, salt, liquid smoke, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Place steaks in a shallow glass dish with the marinade, and turn to coat. For optimum flavor, rub the liquid into the meat. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days.
  3. Preheat grill for medium-high to high heat.
  4. Lightly oil the grill grate. Grill steaks 7 minutes per side, or to desired doneness. Discard leftover marinade.
I found this recipe on allrecipes.com and just tried it and all I have to say is... wow, I haven't had that awesome of a steak in a long time (and since I used to be a grill cook, cooking mainly steaks all day long, I think this is saying something!)  It was simply scrumptious!!  I'm very happy to have found this recipe and since my husband wasn't home for the trial, I can't wait to cook him this yummy steak!! :)
